All mothers want the best for their babies. Eating a variety of foods from each of the food groups while you are breast feeding will help meet your extra needs for calcium, protein, vitamins and minerals.

A healthy diet for breast feeding should include a variety of foods from each food group –

  • breads and cereals – try to choose products with wholegrains
  • meat and meat substitutes – try to include a meal of fish such as salmon at least once per week
  • milk and dairy foods – include milk on your cereal, milky drinks and small amounts of cheese for snacks
  • fruits and vegetables, particularly fresh salads.

You also need plenty of water to drink.

You do not need to avoid any foods while you are breast feeding. Avoiding allergenic foods like egg and peanut will not stop your baby from developing allergies to these foods.
